The Kopački Rit Nature Park
The Kopački rit Nature Park is situated in the central part of the Danube floodplain, at the confluence of Rivers Drava and Danube. The size of the Park is 23,891 hectares (59,000 acres, 238.9 km2) of which 7,143 hectares (17,650 acres, 71,4 km2) are designated as Special Zoological Reserve with higher level of protection. Most of it is wetlands from the Croatian-Hungarian-Serbian border to the city of Osijek. It is the most valuable zoological reserve in Croatia. It is the largest nursery and spawning area for freshwater fish in the Danube region, and one of the largest alluvial wetlands of Europe.
Kopački rit is never the same. It perpetually changes. The appearance of the entire area depends on the intensity of flooding and the volume of water brought by the Danube. On average, the area is flooded 99 days a year. Water deepens the terrain in some areas, creating ponds, and deposits sediments in other areas, resulting in a fascinating mosaic of submerged and exposed layers of the terrain.
There are two major lakes in the Park – Kopačko and Sakadaš. The latter is 7 m deep, the deepest point of the Park area.
Over 2,300 species have found their home in the Nature Park.
This amazing biodiversity includes over 140 plant species. Some grow only here (for example the critically endangered graceful cattail (Typha laxmannii), many are rare but also grow in a few other places in Croatia (for example white water lilies (nyphaea alba) that cover whole acres here, pleasing the eyes in the summer and providing food for deers in the winter).
Insects are the most numerous group of animals, so, of course, they are very well represented here also. Kopački rit has more than 40 dragonfly species, 85 scarab species, 35 day butterfly species, more than 60 nocturnal butterfly species, 11 mosquito species, and about 30 gadfly species. This is only a small part of what research is yet going to discover.
Forty-four freshwater fish species have been recorded in Kopački rit. 35 are native, 9 were brought into the Park.
Eleven species of amphibians have been recorded, that is 55% of the total 20 species present in Croatia. Ten species of reptiles have been recorded in Kopački rit: one turtle species, four species of lizards, and five species of snakes.
Up to now, 293 bird species have been recorded in Kopački rit, which makes up 78,1% of the total bird fauna in Croatia (375 species). , Out of this approximately 140 bird species are nesting here, the rest are migratory.
According to the present research, 54 mammal species live in Kopački rit, more than half of the total number of known species in Croatia.

What to do here?
Besides searching for geocaches, I mean.
A 2,550 m long boardwalk passing through a unique protected area connects the visitor center and pier on the Mali Sakadaš lake, providing a fun and educational stroll for all ages.
Kopački rit is a globally renowned destination for birdwatching. The boat from Veliki Sakadaš pier takes visitors into the floodplains of the Danube. Large colonies of various bird species such as wild geese, ducks, cormorants, herons and egrets, terns, gulls, and white-tailed eagles live here. The most birds can be observed during dry season that lasts from August to February. Lucky visitors can see as many as sixty bird species in their natural habitat in a single day.
Angling is allowed at three locations – Čarna, Vemelj and Grabovačka jezera. It is necessary to obtain a permit - ask the Visitor Center!
The international bicycle routes "Pannonian Peace Route" and "Danube Route" lead through Kopački Rit. Bikes are also available for rent through the Visitors Center.
