Hinerua's Hideaway Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Curglaff: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

A 20 - 45 minute scenic walk through Redwoods and alongside a trout filled stream. Terrain is flat and the track is wide, so strollers should be fine, but because of the flowing water in the stream you will need to watch children.

OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS THERE WILL BE ONGOING RENOVATIONS AT THIS LOCATION. Bridges and viewing platforms are being taken away, and replaced by new structures.

The name Hamurana is the maori pronunciation of Smyrna, the famous Greek city founded by Alexander the Great in Asia minor and referred to in the Book of Revelation as one of the Seven Churches. Another name for Hamurana springs is Te-Puna-i-Hangarua (the spring of Hangarua). Early on, tourists were punted up the stream to the springs, and the foundations of the small jetty can still be seen near the outlet into Lake Rotorua.
The spring has a flow of around a million gallons an hour, and here, in its mysterious depth, a gentle taniwha, Hinerua was once reputed to have made its home. Hinerua was regarded as the pet of a nearby chieftainess, and sometimes left the cold depths of her spring to pay a visit to her mistress, walking delicately around the kumara plantaions and peering through the palisades, but doing no harm to the tribespeople. When the chiefainess died, Hinerua was never seen again. The little blind fish that live deep in the waters of the spring are known as the children of Hinerua.

STAGE 1 Is a smallish plastic container in shape of test tube.
FINAL: The cache is a regular snaplock box.

STAGE 1: S 38° 01.847 E 176° 15.288

Look for a small container at Stage 1. Dont be STUMPED!!!
Co-ordinates for the final are inside. The final is not far away.

HINTS: At the final, reception can be tricky, so I have added this extra hint if you care to read it. Look for a tree with a post embedded in it. From this tree, the cache is hidden in the base of another redwood, only 14 paces away.
