This cache is named in honor of Toaster Head--a letterbox hybrid
cache placed in June of 2002, and adopted by me in November, 2004.
It went missing in June of 2005. I am finally putting another cache
here, but not in the same location.
| You are in the Big River Management Area. You
are required to wear at least 200 square inches of solid
fluorescent orange from the third Sunday in October through the
last day of February, and from the last Thursday in April through
the last day in May. See This
publication for additional regulations. |
These woods are infested with mosquitoes and deer flies in the
summer. Some of the trails may be muddy, but you should have no
difficulty in getting around the mudholes. I have seen large flocks
of turkey in this area. This cache may be difficult to access in
deep snow.
There may be any number of better routes for approaching this
cache, but this is the route I have used:
- Park on the New London Turnpike, 0.6 mile
northeast of the intersection with Congdon Mill Road, at N41
36.674' W71 35.941'.
- Follow a little-used side trail on the north side of
the road. The trailhead is marked by a single large rock.
- About 0.1 mile in, you will encounter a well-used ATV
trail. Turn left on this trail. Before you walk away, take a good
look at where the side trail leaves the ATV trail. You might want
to leave a trail marker or take a waypoint so you can find it again
on your way out.
- The ATV trail winds around and crosses a small stream
on a rustic bridge. Your GPS will be telling you to leave the
trail, but don't do it. After about 0.36 mile on this trail, you
will come to a wider trail (look for a prominent rock in the
intersection).
- Turn right on the wide trail. You can follow your GPS
from here, if you have a good signal (which is doubtful).
- Walk north about 0.08 mile you will come to an
intersection with another wide trail. You may encounter the Toaster
Head effigy at this intersection. Continue in the same direction to
the cache, which is near the trail.
Please be careful to replace the camouflage!
