Geocache Description:

The history of Arbuthnot Sawmill.

Say ARGH!! But not here!

Welcome to the 9th geocache by Blatherskite, placed here on 27/04/2008.

ARBUTHNOT SAWMILL

The founder of the sawmill, Alexander (Sandy) ARBUTHNOT moved to the Koondrook area in the late 1870’s and together with his brother Charles, constructed a spot mill on nearby Gunbower Island.
A rift developed between the brothers and Sandy, using a 2nd hand steam engine which had originally serviced a riverboat, decided to set up his own primitive mill on the bank of the Murray River at Koondrook.
This was to be the foundation of his business in sawmilling and the beginning of a company that has stood the test of time.

An indication of “Sandy’s” character was to get married on Christmas Day so not to lose a days production.

Along with sawmilling, ship building became an important part of “Sandy’s” enterprise and at their peak, 200 men were employed between the timber mill, ship building, timber felling and hauling.
Sandy built a number of paddle steamers and barges for the logging trade. They include the Arbuthnot, built in 1912 and destroyed by fire in 1913, the Murrabit built in 1914 to replace the Arbuthnot and sold a few years later. Sandy also owned the paddle steamer “Glimpse”, which was in service for 36 years and was replaced by the Alexander Arbuthnot in 1923.
The Alexander Arbuthnot paddle steamer is still in service and can be seen at the Port of Echuca as well as many other paddle steamers Arbuthnot’s built.
The largest barge ever built for the Murray was the “Koondrook” which was capable of carrying 200 tons of cargo.

Alexander “Sandy” ARBUTHNOT managed the mill until his death in 1914. Alexander junior ran the mill until forced to retire in 1921 due to ill health.
Since that time, there have only been 3 managers who have carried out the sawmilling tradition started by “Sandy” right up to the present day.
