This is one of a series of caches along the old Abbotsbury branch line.
The 6 mile branch was opened on 9th November 1885 by the Abbotsbury Railway Company in association with the Great Western Railway. The line ran westwards from the Dorchester to Weymouth line at Upwey Junction with intermediate stations at Upwey and Portesham before terminating at Abbotsbury. Stations at Coryates and Friar Waddon were added about 20 years later. Owing to contractor and financial difficulties it took 8 years to build.
Abbotsbury station was conveniently situated just East of the village off the Weymouth to Bridport road. The station had a passing loop, a signal box, a goods shed and an engine shed. It closed to passengers on 1st December 1952.
The single platform still survives but the station building has made way for a private dwelling. The goods shed remains in use as an agricultral machinery store. The freight loading guage can still be seen hanging above the West door.
