Chanco Camp and Conference Center was established on this site during the tenure of the Rt. Rev. Charles Vache, 7th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia (1976-89).
Bishop Vache was born in New Bern, NC (8/24/26). He received his B.A. from UNC (Chapel Hill) (1949) and his M.Div. from Seabury-Western Seminary (1952). Prior to his consecration as bishop (5/29/76) he served churches in Richmond and Portsmouth, VA (Trinity Episcopal Church). Following his retirement as Bishop of Southern Virginia he served as Interim Rector at Bruton Parish, Williamsburg, and at Good Shepherd, Norfolk. He also served as Interim Bishop in the Diocese of West Virginia.
A warm and kindly man, Bishop Vache brought grace and dignity to the office of bishop, and a calm, non-anxious presence to faith communities in conflict. May he rest in peace (Died: All Saint's Day - 11/1/09)
