Provincial Road 424 is the Assiniboine River flood prevention dam (I think it is called a secondary dike) in this area. Over the centuries as the Assiniboine has meandered through the area it has dropped so much silt that it is now higher than the plains to the south of it. If it were to overflow its banks (the natural levee is the primary dike) the water would travel south across country and enter the La Salle River south of Elie. In 1997 an ice jam occurred at the Trans-Canada bridges over the Assiniboine near the Hwy #26 junction. (In fact it was right at the Trans Canada Troll, GC168TQ) The backup sent water flowing over the land in the area north of the Trans-Canada where #424 turns northwest. A local construction contractor used his own backhoe on the bridge to smash up the ice and eventually this helped get the water moving, while the rest of us sandbagged for a day and a night. The water reached a new height that year for which Water Resources was not prepared. The decision was made after that to straighten the provincial road to make it safer (you should have seen the corners it had in the past!). At the same time the level of the road was raised, and the local drainage channels had flood control gates installed. When you are at the cache you are on the gates. Be careful if caching with kids here as the local “boys” come here to drink and then break their bottles. There is also a fair amount of broken concrete with reinforcing steel exposed. If you are daytime caching peer over the north side of the control gate at the design of the gates and the mechanism to move them, it’s quite interesting. Unless it is raining there will be no need to get wet retrieving this cache. It should be a quick stop and grab. The container is a 35mm film canister, which only contains a logbook and an FTF. Enjoy the drive.
