Regular Size Cache

As a history teacher, I have always found coded messages intriguing. After seeing several movies and reading a couple books, I became interested in ENIGMA, one of the toughest encryptions to break during World War II.

The first Enigma machines were created for commercial use in 1919 by Albert Scherbius. He originally took the idea to the German military, but they were not interested. By 1925, however, the German military began purchasing the machines and making improvements to them.

The Enigma was used to encipher and decipher messages. Using a system of rotors and electrical circuits, it keys letters in a random sequence which will not be repeated until 16,900 characters have been keyed. The Nazis limited their messages to less than 250 characters to be on the safe side. The recipient of the encoded message simply set his machine in the exact manner of the original and typed in the encrypted text. The output was the deciphered message. The Nazi military changed these settings daily and sometimes more often.

The Nazi government believed the Enigma to be unbreakable and that was the case for the first few years of the war. The Polish, French, and British put together crack teams of code experts to break it, but it wasn’t until several of the Enigma machines were captured that they had much success. It is said that this team, which worked at Bletchley Park, UK, was responsible for shortening the war by up to two years. The ability to decipher top secret German communications, allowed the allies to fight more effectively.

In order for you to find this cache, you will have to break the ENIGMA. The correct coordinates are encrypted below.

The following coordinates have been encrypted on a Wehrmact/Luftwaffe model UKW-B machine. Below are the settings you will need to decipher these coordinates.
