A little history: The "Chagrin Falls Fire Department" is actually
comprised of two separate organizations. All members are part of
both of them. The Chagrin Falls Village Fire Department was formed
in 1897, and is paid on call for fires within the Village proper.
The department is funded through the general fund of Chagrin
Falls, and has a paid part-time Chief, who is appointed by the
Mayor.
The Chagrin Falls Suburban Fireman's Association, Inc., the
suburban department, is a non-profit corporation that provides fire
and emergency medical services for Chagrin Falls Township, Moreland
Hills, Hunting Valley, South Russell, and Bentleyville. An EMS
contract is also maintained with the Village of Chagrin Falls. The
Fire Chief normally serves as chief of this department also.
The department covers a 32 square mile response area, serving a
population of approximately 15,000 residents.
The fire service is well known for it's traditions. Chagrin Falls
Fire Department is no exception. Every Memorial Day we honor our
fellow fallen brothers. As a tradition the Chagrin Department
honors a past/present department member that has recently passed.
If the member being honored is not buried at Evergreen the memorial
service is held at the memorial stone I have brought you to. The
memorial is conducted by a retired department Captain. The service
also includes honoring the fallen member with the "crossed axe"
ceremony.
