Geocache Description:

[ENG] The coordinates of the main cache, which is about 20 km away, are hidden 30 m west of the observatory gate.

[EST] Eelaare paikneb kohas, kust eesti täheteadus alguse sai. Tartu tähetorn, mis valmis aastal 1810, on kujunenud Ülikooli peahoone kõrval linna tuntuimaks sümboliks. Siin on töötanud sellised kuulsad tähetargad nagu F.G.W.Struwe, E.Hartwig ja E.J.Öpik. Struwele on torni vahetusse lähedusse püstitatud ausammas. Vana tähetorni juurest avaneb suurepärane vaade Tartu kesklinnale.

1958. aastal, täpselt 150 aastat pärast Tartu vana tähetorni ehituse algust, pandi nurgakivi uuele observatooriumile kohas, mis toona kandis Tuulemäe nime. Mõne aastaga kerkis sinna terve teaduslinnak. Siin jätkasid oma kuulsate eelkäijate teadustegevust astronoomid A.Kipper, C. Villmann ja J.Einasto. Huvilistel on siin mõõduka hinnaga pileti lunastamisel võimalik külastada Tõravere stellaariumi, kus asub 1,5-meetrise peegliläbimõõduga teleskoop ja vaadata 2000 merekivist valmistatud mosaiikseina.

Põhiaarde, mis paikneb umbes 20 km kaugusel, koordinaadid on peidus tähetorni väravast 30 m kaugusel lääne suunas.

[ENG] The first point is located where Estonian astronomy began. The Tartu Observatory, completed in 1810, has become the city's best-known symbol next to the University's main building. Famous astronomers such as F.G.W.Struwe, E.Hartwig, and E.J.Öpik have worked here. There is a statue of Struwe in the immediate vicinity of the tower. The old observatory offers a magnificent view of the center of Tartu.

In 1958, exactly 150 years after the start of the construction of the old observatory in Tartu, the cornerstone was laid for the new observatory in the place that was then called Tuulemäe. Within a few years, a whole research campus was built there. Astronomers A.Kipper, C. Villmann, and J.Einasto continued the research of their famous predecessors here. If you are interested in buying a moderately priced ticket, you can visit the Tõravere stellar, where a 1.5-meter-diameter telescope is located, and see a mosaic wall made of 2,000 sea stones.
