Geocache Description:

#100

There are basically two ways you can get to this cache. Unless, of course, you own or have access to a helicopter. You can either row a canoe or some other type of personal watercraft to the cache site, or you can wade across the river to get there.

If you plan to employ the rowing option your best approach is to launch from the Essex canoe portage located near N 44° 28.892' W 73° 7.050'. From here you can journey to the island that the cache is on. Afterwards continue on down the river to the canoe portage located at Essex Overlook and Woodside parks. This portage is located at N 44° 29.985' W 73° 8.537'. Please see the canoeing guide located on the Winooski Park District website for more information on safe canoeing!

If you plan to wade across the river to get to the island you could probably do so from many spots near the island. Your best approach is probably from the River Cove Road side as the land on the other side of the island is private farm land. When placing the cache we entered the river near N 44° 28.497' W 73° 7.654'. There is room here for a few cars to pull off the side of the road safely. Be careful when wading through the water as the rocks underneath are VERY slippery. As of May 29th, 2008, the water level was no higher than 10-12 inches in a few places. Mostly it was 5-8 inches deep.

Once you are on the island there are no paths to speak of. You will have to bushwack the entire way to the cache site.

Have fun, and stay safe!

Now for the words of caution:

* This cache should only be attempted if you feel that you are physically capable of safely navigating or crossing the river.
* This cache should not be attempted alone.
* This cache should be avoided during the high water time that usually occurs during the spring months as the river is fast and deep then.

I would like to thank my good friend, VT_EMT for helping me with this cache. Not only did he donate part of the FTF prize, a very nice unactivated geocoin, he hand painted and stenciled the ammo can to commemorate this cache, my 100th hide, and he accompanied me in the placement the cache. I could not have done it without you!
