The cache is a cylindrical container with log book, pencil and room for some small swaps.
Slaidburn is an estate village at the heart of the Forest of Bowland, where time has made few changes over the last 200 or so years. The short walk to the hiding spot leads through gentle countryside, and is in contrast to many other Bowland caches which require a more strenuous walk on the fells.
The cache is named after the pool formed by the confluence of the Eller Beck and the larger Croasdale Beck. (Often Croasdale Brook on maps, but always “Beck” in the village). This has been a swimming place in the past, and local folklore says that the name was coined after a boy named Peter drowned in the pool. Despite this association, it’s a beautiful, peaceful spot where you can picnic, paddle, catch bullheads or just enjoy the plant and animal life.
Several of the fields here are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest due to the combination and variety of plants in the limestone grassland. Bring a wildflower book, and please treat with respect.
Park in Slaidburn Car Park; from here it’s a 1.2km walk to the site, following the footpath which leads into Shay Wood just above Slaidburn Health Centre.
