In front of you will be Dwightwood springs.
There is a nice pergola there which some benches to sit on and
take a break. From there you can watch people ride their bikes
around the island, stop and look at the springs, and watch ships
slowly out in Lake Huron.
Dwightwood Springs is named after the son of Edwin O. Wood of
Flint, MI. In 1909 he donated money in memory on his late son
Dwight Hulbert Wood. This spring originates from a spring within
the bedrock of the Mackinac Island limestone. Limestone is composed
largely of calcium calcite. Limestone is a sedimentary rock which
means it was formed by different particles being compacted or
compressed. The sediment is then compressed and forms into layers
known as beds or strata.
The limestone her is porous and allows water to flow through the
upper strata down through the lower strata.
In the early years this springs quenched the thirst of many of
the island’s visitors. However, using current water quality
standards, it is not recommended to drink this water as it is
unsafe to drink.
To log this earth cache:
1. Stand next to the springs (in or out of the pergola) and have
your photo taken and then posted with your log. Your face must be
clearly visible.
2. Walk out to the edge of the road and look up. Estimate the
height of the cliffs above you where this springs flow from. You
could also take an altitude reading at the springs. Then use the
stairs to climb up to the top of the bluff and take another
altitude reading and subtract the difference.
3. Email me the answer to #2 using my profile.
Each Cacher that logs a find is required to submit answers to
the questions above (failure to comply will result in a deletion of
your log). The only exception to this are young kids that are
caching with their parents (who have their own account, but not
computer privileges). Per Earthcache guidelines, each cacher is to
learn from their visit/experience. That means each cacher must
perform the necessary task(s) or requirements to log the cache and
earn your smiley.
Any logs that do not meet the above posted requirements will be
deleted at the discretion of the cache owner. All logging
requirements must be completed within 48 hours of logging the cache
online or your log will be deleted unless you have prior permission
from the cache owner.
