Over The River Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

jojo88: I went down to check on this cahce recently, and unfortunately it was nowhere to be found. Also the trail down to the cache location has eroded (is still closed), and quite dangerous. I think it will be safer for everyone if this cache is archived. Thanks to all those who have hunted (successfully and unsuccessfully) over the years.

Geocache Description:

WARNING: This cache is not for everyone. You must be in good shape, and have a moderately good balance. This cache is on a trail which involves STEEP drops, that would be dangerous if you are not careful. At the start of the trail there is a fence which states: "DANGER STEEP CLIFFS, NO ACCESS". This trail will be dangerous in wet, or dark conditions, and I advise you to wear proper outdoor shoes. This trail (option 1) is steep, narrow, at at some times closed. So, if you are willing and prepared to proceed, than go ahead, at your own risk. Otherwise, there is another, longer, but safer trail, further west. The 3.5 terrain rating is for the conditions and hazards of the trail, but it is (easily) managable if you are careful.

There are actually 2 ways down to this cache. I recomend option 1. The above warning is for option 1. It is shorter but more difficult tahn option 2.

Option 1:
Start at the coordinates N49 14.481 W123 13.645. This is at the west corner of the lookout parking lot off of SW Marine Dr. You can head around the fence. Take the narrow, steep, but well-defined trail (Westward) for a good 10 minutes, until you reach waterlevel. I recommend you keep you hands free during this part of the trail for your own safety. Once you reach the riverside, continue West on the trail.

Option 2:
Start by turning of SW marine dr. at Old Marine Dr. (N 49° 14.835 W 123° 14.340). Look for a trail heading down to the beach. This option will take you through Wreck beach (clothing optional), but it is an easier walk then option 1. If you don't want to violate any closed trail rules, the cache can be reached by going this way. once near the river, head east until you get near the cache.

While heading down the trail, take a moment to stop and admire the views of the Fraser River, the ocean and the numerous log booms scattered about the side of the river. You might want to wear long pants and watch out for stinging nettle! The cache is a small 350ml Lock&Lock container containing small items.

June 20th 08 Update: After checking up on the cache, which was safe and sound. It is slightly overgrown, and the stinging nettles may cause some problems, so I'm raising the difficulty rating from 1.5 to 2. This does not mean that the cache is harder to find.

June 7th 09 Update: Checking on this cache, it is extremely overgrown, so I have moved it to a open area.
