Geocache Description:

^^ Steeples and Stained Glass ^^

This is one in a series of caches highlighting towering steeples and stained glass windows.
It is our hope that this series will showcase some unique architecture and beautifully crafted
windows as well as providing some tidbits of history of these structures.

And what's better than seeing some beautiful work and getting a smiley for it!

Here is a little history of the current site. The location of the cache will take you to what is known as St. Colman Parish on W 65th Street. St. Colman was founded in 1880 to serve the growing Irish immigrant population of Cleveland's West Side. The original Church was a modest house in Pear Street, which was the site of the first St. Colman's Mass on July 25, 1880.

As written history has recorded it, the church was built "in 1914, the present church building was begun and completed in 1918 under the second pastor, Msgr. James O'Leary. Msgr. O'Leary traveled to Italy to buy marble for the interior and had it sent to Dublin, commissioning sculptors there to carve the Baptismal Font, Pulpit, and the Communion Rail. The alters, statues and the rest were done in Italy. It was important to Msgr. O'Leary that some of the work was done by Irish craftsman since, in the early part of the 20th century, Irish immigrants like many other immigrants were looked down upon."
