Geocache Description:

L'Eglise Romane de Saint-Denis

Eglise de St-Denis

---FR---

Surrounded by a cemetery, the church of Saint-Denis is situated in center of the village.

The church tower is the oldest building in the village. Originally the tower was probably built of wood and surrounded by a ditch. This was where the population took refuge in case of danger.

In the Roman period (XIIth century), a tower was built of rough-cut sandstone and limestone and served as a defensive watch tower.

In the eighteenth century, a classical building was added to the tower, which in the meantime was used as a church
