At 959m, Mount Pirongia is the highest mountain in the Waikato.
The quickest way up to the summit is via Corcoran Road, and this takes in the Ruapane trig (and other cache) on the way. Times posted are 3 - 5 hours, which are very generous. It took me a leisurely 1 hour 20mins this time up, although last time I left my pack in the car and did the carpark to summit in 54 mins. Due to the higher elevation, remember that weather conditions can change quickly. Always carry a change of clothes and waterproofs. Boots are recommended as the track can get very muddy. Although the track is steep in places, it is well used and maintained. Suitable for people of average experience and good fitness. Be sure to carry water as the track follows a ridge line away from any streams. Great views from the top on a clear day. There is a hut (with water) another 20 mins walk further on if you wish to make it an overnighter. The name of this cache relates to a psychological phenomenon sometimes encountered in high altitude mountaineering. It’s that irrational urge to get to the top even when there’s every chance it’ll kill you. Be warned! The cache is a 5 litre clear Sistema. Bearing in mind the situation, the contents are more outdoor themed and may prove useful in an emergency. To get to the goodies, you will need to step just off to the side of the track.
