Hercules (or Heracles in the Greek) in Roman mythology was the son of the god Zeus and a mortal mother, Alcmena. In art he is often seen with a lion skin and a club. He is portrayed as a champion and a great warrior, a man of action and masculinity, embodying strength, courage, and great appetite. However, he was not above cheating and using unfair tricks to achieve his desires. He was renowned as making the world safe for mankind by destroying many dangerous monsters.
Atlas, in Greek mythology, was one of the primordial Titans. He was one of the Titans who warred against the Olympians, including Zeus. When the Titans were defeated, Zeus condemned Atlas to stand at the western edge of the earth, holding up the heavens on his shoulders, to prevent the two entities from resuming their primordial embrace. It is a common misconception that Atlas was forced to hold the earth on his shoulders. Classical art shows him holding a celestial sphere, not a globe. [From Wikipedia]
