Located between the mounts is a concrete and earthen covered
bunker that housed powder, shell, and plotting rooms as well a
electrical generator and air compressor. Each gun crew used its own
entrance to the structure and shared the spotting and plotting
facilities. Five off site fire control positions as well as a radar
serviced this weapons installation.
The
6-inch guns were medium range (15 miles) guns used for coastal
defense against light cruisers, destroyers, and other light craft.
These guns were shielded barbette mounts. A wrap-around style
shield
protected the gun and crew from three sides and from above. These
guns had a rate of fire of 4 round per minute, and were called
"Rapid Fire" guns.
