Geocache Description:

Tugged into a crack of the rock face, at 568m asl a short climb up from the parking area.

C.J. Langenhoven, famous South African writer, also writer of “Die Stem” – South African Anthem – came around here one day and carved the name “Herrie” into a rock.

Herrie was an elephant character from one of his books “Sonde met die Bure”- but in a joking way he referred to this carving in the rock as a monument to himself.

This exact spot was declared as a National Monument in 1973 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of his birth date.

Today known as Herrie se Klip.

Many traveler through the Karoo has stopped here for a coffee break, some padkos or just a photo of this famous “graffiti”.
