Geocache Description:

Gate lodge between Cappoquin and Villierstown, County Waterford. Roadside location with grass & some low vegetation.

Dromana Gate is a Hindu-Gothic gate lodge dating from around the 1830s. Originally built from wood or papier mache to greet the owner of Dromana Estate, Henry Villiers-Stuart and his wife, Theresia Pauline Ott of Vienna, on returning from their honeymoon in 1826. The couple were so enchanted with it that they had it reconstructed in more durable materials. The structure was probably inspired by the Brighton Pavilion in England. It is the only example of this type of architecture in Ireland. The river which flows under the connecting bridge is the Finisk which is a tributary of the River Blackwater. The Gate is approximately 3km south of Cappoquin town on the eastern side of the Blackwater river. It is 6km north of Villierstown - drive between the large gate posts at the top of the village - this is now a public road. The cache is a small round camouflaged tupperware box. Please replace exactly as found.
