Geocache Description:

walloon

Walloon Belgian immigrants
first settled in the area between Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay in the mid-1850s. One example of folk tradition in Wisconsin's Walloon Belgian settlement is the celebration of the Kermiss festival (still being held today). The Walloon word "Kermiss" comes from "Kirk-Messe", which means "church mass". This originated as an annual celebration commemorating the dedication of the church. Later it became associated with the harvest season, and became a festival much like Thanksgiving, in which people gave thanks for a bountiful harvest. The first Kermiss in America was celebrated in 1858 in the small town of Roseire. Father Daems, a Walloon speaking Catholic priest, who had inspired Wallooon settlers to come to the area, said mass at this first Kermiss. Later Kermisses could last for two or three days and included a variety of games, food and other festivities. Walloon Belgian recipes have been passed down through the generations, and one can sample a variety of traditional Walloon dishes including Booyah, Trippe and Jutte, just to name a few, at this yearly celebration. Kermiss is held in many of the rural towns of Brown, Door, and Kewaunee counties, usually after the fall harvest (September).

This cache will bring you to a plaque dedicated to the areas Walloon Belgians. Just to the North is the smallest/over crowded cemetery I have ever seen. It is approximately 20' x 20' and holds about 75 gravestones. I hope you enjoy this site and the history lesson as much as I did.
