The cache is near the Cornwall Flooding, in the Pigeon River Country State Forest. It is a "tribute" to a dam cacher by the name of TreePlanter who has placed several caches near dams, creeks, streams and rivers across Michigan. I've enjoyed these out-of-the way spots, with their scenic views and wildlife and am placing this cache to provide a little TreePlanter touch up here in the North Woods.
The container is a large ammo can, full of typical swag, a log book, and a small FTF prize.
Leave your geo-vehicle at the parking coordinates and walk across the earthen dam. Take time to enjoy the peaceful view. Look for the critters that abound; at dawn and dusk you have a good chance of seeing deer or elk, hearing the occasional coyote yipping and howling! This is bear country so keep an eye out! Once you cross the earthen dam, the route to the cache involves a few hundred feet of bushwhacking. Wear long pants and bring bug spray.
The best route into the Flooding area is off of Osmun Road. Look for the sign for Cornwall Flooding. When the weather is hot and dry, the road can be handled (carefully)by most vehicles. But be warned that spring melt and heavy rains may make the access road too difficult for all except the sturdiest 4-WD cars/trucks.
While you are visiting the Pigeon River Country State Forest, check out other caches. Capt. Bud and Pepsiman have several caches that are challenging AND show the real beauty of this very special part of Northern Michigan. One cache, Cornwall Creek, by Capt. Bud, is a bit less than .20 from this Dam Tribute.
