Whippoorwill Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Cache Sleuth: The cache was destroyed (washed away) in the epic flooding that occurred at the end of June. The area where it was hidden is now a complete mess with lots of remaining mud, fallen trees, and debris that was left behind by the receding waters. The place is in such bad shape that I don't see how I can rehide a cache there, so I have decided to archive this listing. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to find it over the last 8 years!

Geocache Description:

The second in my series of caches placed near popular rock climbing areas around Summersville Lake, located just south of Summersville, West Virginia.

From U.S. Route 19, turn onto Whippoorwill Road. If travelling north, this is a left-hand turn; if going south, turn right. After turning, follow the paved portion of the road that curves downhill and to the right. There are three old jeep trails that intersect the paved road, going off to the left at various points. Park your vehicle and hike the most level of these three roads (starting at coordinates N38° 14.042, W080° 51.142). After a short distance, you will find the trail blocked with an old fallen tree and a bit beyond that you will come to a large clearing with several trails leading off in different directions. Proceed with caution from here. Some of the trails take you to the edge of high cliffs with spectacular views, but one misstep can lead to serious injury or worse. The way to the cache is a very steep and, at times, muddy trail that goes down to the lake between two of these cliffs. Once you get down near the water's edge, there are popular climbing areas both to the left and the right, including such creatively-named routes as Saddle Sores, Wendy's Jugs, Blimey, Cowboy in the Dirt, Gimme a Clown and Whinerlamer. Due to the high cliffs, drop offs and rough terrain, this cache is not recommended for young children.

The cache is in a 17oz. Lock & Lock container that holds several family-friendly trade items and a log book with pen.
If the container is not covered properly, it can be easily seen by someone looking over from the cliff base or uphill from the lake, so please rehide it exactly as found so it will still be there for the next cacher. I had some difficulty getting a good set of coordinates due to the hillside and cliffs, so to compensate I made the hint very specific.

** SPECIAL E-Z CACHING TIP: If you have access to a boat and the lake is at summer pool, the cache is only about 30 feet uphill from the shore!
