Island Cascades at Dial Mill Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

talk2azs: I thought I saw new NO trespassing signs out near the road the last time I drove by. I'm going to archive this one. I do believe the island is in public right of way. But I'm not going to chance it. Too bad though. This really is a great place for a creative cache. Thanks to all that have hunted it.

Geocache Description:

A historical site surrounded by a great natural area NE of Conyers 1 mile off GA Highway 138.

Bring your own pen. There is no room in the cache for a writing instrument.

I found this place right after my parents moved to Oxford, GA. I decided to explore this area and found a very old structure next to Haynes Creek that runs through here. It turns out that I had found Dial Mill. Rockdale County historical records show that the mill was built in 1825 and was used until the early to mid 1900's. The mill is located on private property, so do not cross the stream to access the structure. But it can be seen on the Newton County side of Haynes Creek on your way to the camouflaged 35mm cannister micro cache.

You can find a place to park on the side of the road on Hightower Trail. WARNING: Do not walk on or near the narrow bridge on Dial Mill Rd. People tend to speed around the curve right near the bridge making this a dangerous area. I should know, I am sometimes one of those drivers.

Once you have parked, walk across the street and enter the forest at the trailhead. Dial Mill can be viewed from the bank of the stream. The remnants of the old water wheel are still visible. There are also an old sprocket and chain hanging on the building to the right of the water wheel. Look to the right of the building and you will see an old rusted antique truck. You can see the "I H" logo on the front of the truck grill. This is an old 1940's/1950's era International Harvester pickup truck. Click here (visit link) to read a little more about International Harvester trucks manufactured between 1907 and 1975. This truck was probably one of the vehicles used to transport materials to and from the mill. Look even further towards the right of the mill, and you will see the remnants of the old wood water trough that once transported the water to the water wheel.

There are two more historical structures associated with the mill on the private property across the stream which due to all the plant life, are barley visible in the Summer from Dial Mill Road.

Enjoy the short walk towards the cache up the beaten trail along the bank of stream. Take some time to enjoy the sights and sounds of the waters. Be aware that after heavy rains, Haynes Creek will swell up making the cache inaccessible via a dry route. Take your shoes off if this is the case.
