|Poço da Neve is the interstation of a nice hike from Corujeira, a district above Funchal, to Pico do Arieiro. The caches “Aguas dos Tornos” and “Hells Throat” are the other end of the row.
|If you start here on your way down to Funchal you will log the cache "Passeio Duro" and, instead of finishing your walk down at Parque Ecológico do Funchal, “Casa do Barreiro”, you turn at N 32° 41.675 W 016° 54.704 (a basalt block as marker) into a small and narrow track which leads you down to the caches “Aguas dos Tornos” and “Hells Throat”. The track is quite dangerous. Do not use it when it’s rainy or wet. You also have to be free from vertigo and giddiness. Wear mountain boots.
Poço da Neve: this igloo of stones, built in 1813, was used in the past as a storage room for ice which was produced during the winter months when snow felt on Pico Arieiro. Here you can find a description in Portuguese:
Poço da Neve
The hiking guide of Raimundo Quintal “Levadas e Veredas da Madeira” is also helpful. The guide is available in several languages.
An alternative way down to Funchal is the “Caminho da Neve” (Route of the ice-runners). On this route, the ice was brought to Funchal. In this case, you go along the “Levada da Negra”.
