Geocache Description:

GeoTrek - Don't Flood the Bike Path

Time: 7:00 pm
Date: May 29, 2008
Location: Parking Lot at Entrance to Chena Lakes Recreation Area

Calling all Alaskan Cachers! Summer is here and we are looking forward to exciting time of Geocaching and summer activities.

This event will help feature the bike path system that winds its way throughout the Chena Lakes Recreation area east of Fairbanks. This event is suitable to all ages of cachers and features a bike path that is removed from traffic. We do ask that all riders wear appropriate clothing and strongly encourage riders to wear approved helmets. Trails also wind around the lakes as well as take on as far as the Chena River. This is one more event tied to our 2008 "Hike, Bike, or Float the Alaskan Outdoors" GeoTrek Summer Series.

In addition to the social aspects of our GeoTrek - Summer Series, we will also participate in any needed CITO at the trailhead and any needed trail upkeep and maintenance along the way. As this trail system receives quite a bit of winter use, please bring along a trash bag or two so we can remove any leftovers from the winter season. Please also feel free to bring along any travel bugs or geocoins that need trading or simply to log them through an Alaskan cache that is not in the heart of the city.

New cachers are highly encouraged to attend and learn from some of the local experienced cachers in the basic use of a gps. This bike ride will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about waymarking, tracks, routes, and general directional awareness. We are also hoping to have some geo-games setup along the route to assist participants with estimation skills and we as some temporary, event specific "cycle and claim" caches containing some prizes for younger participants.

At this time, we are also in the beginning planning stages of lending some support to the Chena Bike Classic, the Midnight Sun Run, and a cleanup of the Chena River. Please bring along any and all ideas of other events we can support to help contribute to our community as Alaska's Interior GeoAddicts.
