Geocache Description:

!! News 9th Feb 2002: This Cache has been moved and restocked !! Butser Hill is located off the A3(M), close to Portsmouth. It's a great place for walking, horse-riding, cycling, flying kites and model planes, or just enjoying the Hampshire views. The cache is on the sloping south side of the hill.

The cache site is a short walk from the top parking area (£1 for parking all year round). Given that it's so easy to get to Butser Hill, I selected a slightly more challenging resting place for the cache. It's a bit of a scramble down the steep hillside, probably more so in wet conditions. Long trousers are advised as the bushes are a bit prickly.

I advise you start from N 50° 58.471 W 0° 59.177 so that you enjoy the great views over the south coast and the Isle of Wight on the horizon. Now trust your GPS directions and go hunt! You might follow a path for some of the way, but the cache site is not on a path.

The cache is a black container with a red lid hidden somewhere at ground level. If you want further details, see the detailed spoiler section below.

Original contents of the cache:

  • Intro-letter
  • Log book and pencil
  • Various new toys for kids (I won't spoil the surprise)
  • Small bottle of something aged 8 years for the adults
  • Crack-and-shake glowstick
  • Matches
  • Collectible Norwegian picture telephone card
  • 4 old English stamps (80-100 years old) plus various other stamps
  • Old coin from 1918, recent coins from Austria and Italy
