McNearney Lake Lookout Tower

Be careful!! Don’t fall!! You are standing close to the highest point in Chippewa County at 1090 feet. (Highest point is just to the east of the tower)
McNearnney Lake Lookout Tower is one of several in the area that were used to watch for forest fires in the 1940's and 1950's. Others were Dumond Hill, Eckerman Corner and Eckerman. This tower is still standing and to my untrained eye looks to be in very good condition. The tower it self stands another 90 feet high with WSUE - FM radio from Sault Saint Marie having a mast to broadcast from on the top.
Bench Mark McNearnney is just outside the fence and has an official elevation of 1086 feet. I placed my GPS on the benchmark and it read 1119 feet. You might try yours and see how you compare.
I thought I would get great reception up this high and with no leaves on the trees but I didn’t, so I would appreciate some feedback on the coordinates of my cache.
Take FS Road 3959 west from the Salt Point Road, it was in very good shape and a car can do this to the bottom of the tower.
At this time of year I could see McNearnney Lake off to the west and Lake Superior off to the North. This great view will soon be gone when the leaves come out for the summer.
Spend a few minutes looking around the area and you will see old footing from buildings that were used when the tower was active.
