First get to Kilbirnie Loch! Start at the Water sports car park. Walk across the playing field's edge to the fishermens path. It's very muddy in one place only. Take some food for the swans, they expect (demand) it. In summer don't follow the side of the loch - take the path up the slope in the wood and you will encounter a better straight path. Lochside vegetation is very high in summer.
It's 'Blast the Furnace' because quite a bit of the loch was filled in with debris from the old Glengarnock Steelworks, especially slag from the Blast Furnaces. The red hot slag was poured into the loch and 'exploded' according to the 'old timers'. Much of the loch side is made up of solid slag with old bricks, etc. embedded in it.
They made rails here, famously the ones for the Forth Railway Bridge.
A sheltered wet area within a small copse.
