Geocache Description:

Located in the Veteran's Park area

I am a native of Monterey. My parents arrived in Monterey about 1914 and settled in the area of Monterey known as “Garlic Hill”. If you are not a native, “Garlic Hill” was where the hardworking fisherman lived. Each day you would usually see them walking down the hill to the wharf in late afternoon as they would go out each evening to catch sardines which was the mainstay of the day.

Also located in the area is the Defense Language School (DLI) which is now closed to all but the Military. Prior to that, the area was known as the Presidio of Monterey, complete with a Calvary Troop. Being a horse lover from day one, I would watch them through the fence of our backyard, come up the street, make a turn at the top and head back for the stables. Prior to closing the area, we kids could go to the movies, hike through the area, watch the fireworks from Presidio Hill and listen to free band concerts on warm summer evenings.

The American Legion Hall was just a half block away located on a dirt road. This area behind the Hall was the highlight of my younger days. I would leave in the morning with lunch and my dog and be gone most of the day hiking and playing in this area now known as Veteran’s Memorial Park. It was in this area I learned to drive a stick shift car.

The multicaches that I have placed here are in memory of those Childhood Days when life was simple and we kids didn’t have a worry or a care. The trails are still there only better and will lead you on a nice walk. Poison Oak is in the area but I was careful to place the caches out of their reach.

You must find cache #1 to retrieve the cords for cache #2. My GPS was jumping around a bit so if someone has a better reading, let me know. The caches are contained in my usual lock and lock clear plastic boxes covered with a dusting of the material in the area.

The coords above are the listing for the 1st cache and I have listed the coords for parking. You can walk to the second cache from the first.

Parking coords are: N 36 36.090 W 121 54.600

You will see the area on the right side to leave the car off the road. And this road is well used so be careful - watch the children and dogs. Muggles may be in the area, both walking and on bikes.
