Geocache Description:

This is a small cache that is a park and grab - you can pull up to within 10 feet of the cache. It is a small lock and lock that will hold small trade items and travelers. As this is a busy area and close to the road, please ensure that the cache is well hidden when returning to it's hidey-hole.

Sheffield Cove is the area opposite Mackerel Cove, across Beavertail Road. The cove is home to a wonderful marsh, where many locals quahoggers dig for clams. There is a small boat access point at the end of the road. The marsh is a place for great birding, wildlife photography, and painting with several paths through the marsh grass. As you stand at the cache, facing the cove, you can see Dutch Island light to the right and Beavertail Road to the left. The farm across the cove borders Fort Getty.

This spit of land at Beavertail Road was the scene of one of the worst tragedies in the island's history, On September 21, 1938, during the infamous Hurricane of '38, a school bus was trapped on this roadway by rising waters and several of the children were swept out to sea by the storm surge. You can read accounts of this tragedy here (visit link) . R.A. Scotti's book, "Sudden Sea" provides a chilling and captivating recounting of the events on that tragic day. I highly recommend this fascinating read to anyone interested in the history of this area.

That said, this is a nice spot with beautiful views, little know by non-islanders. The cache is well hidden - please ensure it remains out of sight. *** PLEASE KEEP ALL TRADE ITEMS AND THE LOG BOOK SEALED IN THE ENCLOSED BAGGIES - THE CACHE IS CLOSE TO THE WATER AND TENDS TO BECOME DAMP ***
