A challenging nanocache (one of the smallest I have seen) in an unusual ash tree. It is one of the caches set up for the "CITO IT IN SOLIHULL" event in May 2008. You could waste a lot of time on this one or just strike lucky!!
Actually ash trees have fruits which are called 'samaras' - not nuts. They are unusual in that it takes at least two winters of chilling to remove the dormancy, imposed by the seed coat and pericarp (fruit wall) plus the chemicals in the seed, before the immature embryo can develop into something that can actually germinate into a young tree seedling. This ash tree is quite an old specimen and has lots of new shoots growing up from the base of the trunk so there's plenty of scope for hiding a very small object, hence the difficulty.
May 2010: After being diabled for several months the nasty nano 'tough nut' is back in place in a slightly new location on the same ash tree. It is wired into place so shouldn't go missing. Just unscrew to get at the log roll. Please write small
I've added some fresh photos and a new spoiler.
