Geocache Description:

We invite you to Szatmárnémeti (Satu Mare) to explore the most popular sights of the country town of Sathmar.

It was mentioned first as Zothmar in 1150. About 1000 a.d,
royal hunters were settled by queen Gizella, who founded a settlement called "Németi".

The Tartars ruined its castle down in 1241. It was built up again by the Bathori-s (seized by János Zsigmond), then burnt down by Polish military. In 1661, Turkish hordes destroyed it, finally, since the 18th century, there has been no trace of the building.

In 1802, a new county was born from the transsylvanian county, this town became the capital.
