NOT anywhere near the gate!
Happy Hollow was the nightclub/dance hall back in the 1920's. From the East Butler bicentennial 1976, Old Happy Hollow was build in 1928 owned by Harry 'Dutch' Garlo. It was 50ft wide by 70 feet long. It got it's name because during this time, it was the prohibition era. People have said if you were not happy when you arrived you were when you left! Butch is known for his large dogs and there was a coal mine in the lower level to heat the building. On Saturdays, the local kids came here to roller skate. (I still have my Montgomery Ward white with blue wheels roller skates-how about you??). In the early 40's, Happy Hollow housed the fire equipment for the newly formed Fire Department. There was square dances and bingos to help fund the fire department. Happy Hollow was purchased by Fretz Moon Tube Co and is now used by Keystone Tubular Service (Marmon-Keystone) for storage of pipes.
The best place to park is along the side road. Do not park on the main road as it is well traveled. The house on the corner up from the cache site is one of the four original farm houses. It is the Stevenson Farm house built by Mr. Stevenson for his son in 1826. There are currently people living there so please observe from the cache ground zero as to not disturb them.
Across the street where Valvoline Oil Company use to be is recorded as the worst fire in East Butler history. The year was 1915 during a thunderstorm, lightning struck an oil tank on the hillside. It exploded and set off a chain reaction. The fire burned for two weeks before brought under control.
Thank you for visiting. Please bring your own pen/pencil. Please replace cache where you found it!
