The cache container is a peanut butter jar big enough for a log, pencil and small trade items. It is located across M-109 from Maple Grove Cemetery. It can be found even if there is deep snow. For parking, find a wide spot on the road shoulder. (Note - this cache is not on National Lakeshore property.)
MAY 2014 The new bike trail passes nearby but does not disturb the cache.
This cache is named for the classic 1948 movie directed by John Huston, starring Humphrey Bogart as Fred C. Dobbs, Walter Huston as Howard, Tim Holt as Bob Curtin, Barton MacLane as Pat McCormick, Bruce Bennett as James Cody, and Alfonso Bedoya as Gold Hat the bandit.
Howard: Now here's where we're bound for, hereabouts. Don't show properly whether there's mountains, swamp, or desert. That shows the makers of the map themselves don't know for sure. Once on the ground, all we gotta do is open our eyes and look around.
Fred C. Dobbs: This is the country where the nuggets of gold are just crying out for you to take them out of the ground and make 'em shine in coins on the fingers and necks of swell dames.
Howard: Aah, gold's a devilish sort of thing, anyway. I know what gold does to men's souls. Ah, as long as there's no find, the noble brotherhood will last but when the piles of gold begin to grow... that's when the trouble starts.
Howard: A thousand men, say, go searchin' for gold. After six months, one of them's lucky: one out of a thousand. His find represents not only his own labor, but that of nine hundred and ninety-nine others to boot. That's six thousand months, five hundred years, scramblin' over a mountain, goin' hungry and thirsty. An ounce of gold, mister, is worth what it is because of the human labor that went into the findin' and the gettin' of it.. Gold itself ain't good for nothing except making jewelry with and gold teeth.
Fred C. Dobbs: I think I'll go to sleep and dream about piles of gold getting bigger and bigger and bigger.
Gold Hat: Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges.
