Background (Psyprof): Up Joppa Mountain Road from Joppa, accessed from Rutledge Pike, sits a homestead and studio that is as prototypically Appalachian as the pottery that is produced there. Next to the road, on both sides, are displayed many of the pottery works of Ann and McDonald Crosby, some of which are made from the native clay dug and refined on site. Drive down the looping driveway, and you are treated to many more. Face jugs are here in abundance, resembling some seen in the Foxfire series of books. But there is a wide range of other wares, both utilitarian and decorative. The Four Square barn-side quilt, part of the quilt trail is at this location. (http://www.knoxville.com/visitors/072407_quilt). One would never suspect, from looking at this couple, that they hold masters in fine arts. But that is the way of so many artists and artisans. It is in celebration of these Appalachian arts that this cache is placed – with the kind permission of Ann and McDonald. Sign the logbook, but know that you will be welcome at the studio if you arrive while they are at work, and you may learn much from watching.
