A quick drive by on the long and boring road from Bendigo to Kerang.
Duck season was an important time for the local economy and opening weekend would see Kerang swell with thousands of shooters stocking up on supplies.
Changes in attitude to hunting and long years of drought have led to duck season not occurring in the last couple of years.
Tragowel Swamp was once a very popular spot for the shooters. Local legend has it that a nearby property owner was a very keen shooter and no matter how dry the other wetlands around Kerang were, two weeks before opening the Tragowel Swamp would be flooded with water ensuring there would always be ducks there.
The swamp is now a 274 hectare sanctuary with scattered Black Box trees. It supports an ibis rookery and shooting is no longer permitted.
Evidence of its appeal for the aborigines as a rich source of food can be found throughout the swamp with many middens, graves and artifacts.
