Youth she was, but now in her prime!! Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Strangler: Over the last few weeks I have had some personal stuff going on and as a result have decided to Archive this cache. Due to poor health and being unable to drive I have not been in a good position to maintain it and number of my caches are in need of maintenance or replacement.
There have been many good times and I have shared some great moments with Geocachers but in recent months it has affected my health and personal life to the extent that I have decided to distance myself from the hobby and concentrate on other things far more important.

PLEASE, May I ask that there is no speculation over my personal circumstances, email me privately and please do not post personal comments here or elsewhere.

Thank you to all that visited and found this cache.

Geocache Description:

A cache placed to recognise an unusual piece of ‘Street Art’. Placed as a cache and dash but take a little time to admire this statue.

I have driven by this piece many times and always wondered about its origin. Just as I have driven by I would assume thousands of other motorists, bus passengers and pedestrians have done the same without a second glance. It is heavily surrounded by tree and bush and could do with a little clearing by the Council. There is no visible plaque on the statue that I could find so I decided to do some research and the following is what I came up with:

"Artist Harry Seager. Title; Youth.

Seager's piece represents youth in the form of an abstracted figure of a pony-tailed girl. Composed of large, simplified forms, it shows a debt to the modern movement in sculpture and particularly to the influence of Henry Moore's monumental, reclining nude figures.
Commissioned by the Birmingham Public Works Department in 1958, the sculpture was selected from several models put forward by the artist who was living in Smethwick at the time. Its cost of £370 was paid for from the Capital Account. When unveiled in 1959 it was reported in the local press that the sculpture was to be 'but the first of a series of statues planned for the city's estates'."

Personally I thought this was a more recent piece of art so I was surprised by the 1958 commisioning date, before I was born, and I thought I am old!

Parking is available within 50m but DO NOT park in front of the statue! This is a very busy junction and is also very near part of Birminghams A47 Heartlands Spine Road Car Sharing Lane and is planned to be a Red Route!!

Accessible by wheelchair and ideal for pedestrians.

The cache is the usual 35mm container with a small pencil and placed within easy reach. Please put cache back out of sight.
Difficulty rating is 2 because of the busy location, especially rush hours. Beware muggles!
