Geocache Description:

"On the Old Oxley Grade" ... a century-old elevated railroad burm that is visible October through April from the county highway. Terrain is relatively easy; the whitetail deer still use this "railway" as their main route. Watch for twigs and branches. Elevation is easily navigable for most, but not accessible via wheelchair.

West of Boulder Junction, WI is this novel cache that is placed in honor of SWEECH ... my daughter and geocaching buddy. Sweech has included geocaching in her classroom curriculum with 7th and 8th graders to teach them geography, computer skills, teamwork, mathematics, reading ... all those wonderful things we of the hobby enjoy.

She is likely going to overtake me in total caches found, and she's been at this 5 months less than I. (I'd better get going).

The Oxley grade is a sloped earthway that used to carry steel rails as well as freight and passenger trains from Boulder Junction to points west and north. The terminus was Buswell - a small community near Papoose Lake to the northwest of the cache site about 8.5 miles.

The Oxley stop featured a store and post office building, and remnants of the small village can bee seen across the county highway just a short distance west of the grade. Look for an old redwood colored building and house not far off the highway.

The trains stopped running in these parts about 75 years ago, and the size of the trees that now grow out of the grade are testament to the neglect of man and the regeneration of nature. I wish the trains were back with gasoline now at a dear price!

Anyway, our geo-town of Boulder Junction needs a TB hotel, so I've created the LODGE - the Northwoods variety. The lodge is easy to find ... is out in the open ... well above ground ... and will be easy to find in winter. It is not a log cabin, or cedar-shake building, (though it IS made of scrap wood), but gets it's inspiration from Gizfinder of the Appleton area, and Sweech's new home town.

Not a terribly large cache, but big enough to hold a few TB's looking for a restful break on the road to wherever TB's go. Geocoins too, please. Drop yours here, and pick some up to trade. Small swag items OK of course, but we'd like to see as many trackables as possible. Thanks! There's a photo of the actual cache in the gallery. Look at it if you want a peek at the cache, or stay out of the gallery if you want more of a challenge. Enjoy the Northwoods, Boulder Junction, and the history of the area.

The Oxley Grade is now part of the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest. The Geocache Notification Form has been submitted to Sonja Margitan of the Wisconsin DNR. Geocaches placed on Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource managed lands require permission by means of a notification form. Please print out a paper copy of the notification form, fill in all required information, then submit it to the land manager. The DNR Notification form and land manager information can be obtained at: (visit link)

BTW: There are 3 other great caches within 2 miles of here, and many others within 5 or so. Make a day of it!

Wood Ticks in season; check your pant legs for those pesky buggers.
