Daylight hours otherwise, because I don't want the nearby
"Gardeners" worrying about their new pride & joy (well, new to
them!). And it is indeed a joy! The original Gardener had some
great stories to share, but he's now in Minnesota taking care of a
"spud." (LINK)
And since the new Gardeners (Mike & Billy) are still learning
the business, please try not to distract them too much begging for
hints.

These fine examples of Americana have a very ardent fan base.
There are magazines & websites devoted to them. And a
Pennsylvania PBS station even produced a popular video which aired
nationwide, documenting their existence throughout the state.

They were always meant to thrive roadside, but sadly they are
disappearing from our landscape. So you really should visit to
appreciate any that are still bravely dodging extinction.
This particular Rose variety
began its life in New Rochelle, NJ in 1927. In the
beginning, it was known by the name "Lackawanna Trail" and
spent its time in Stroudsburg, PA. Later it was renamed
"JERRY'S." After a period of declining health, it was moved
to Lancaster, PA in 1998 for some intensive
rejuvenating therapy.
But then another saga began in transplanting it to a new home!
After many fits and false starts, it finally rooted on Main St. in
Towanda, PA in 2003. That's busy &
scenic U.S Rt. 6! (LINK) & (LINK) You can read all
about this Rose's history and view
many photos from various stages of its life at this site: (LINK)
Busy Rt. 6 Towanda means lots of muggles. At all hours. You will
have to be EXTREMELY STEALTHY for this (hence the 2
difficulty rating). Be aware of being viewed from all sides. I
recommend parking nearby & retrieving. Then PLEASE WALK AWAY
to do the logging. Maybe to somewhere nearby out of the
elements while enjoying a cup o' joe! I had a hard time getting the
coords, even with 2 gps units, so don't be too proud to use all
the help provided on this page. And please try not to distract the
new owners begging for hints, they're not too familiar with
nano's.
The cache contains just a log, so BYOP. TWEEZERS MAY BE
HELPFUL. You just need to sign INITIALS ONLY, not full
caching name nor is a date needed. Please give me lots of notice
when the log starts getting full. When warmer weather returns, I
hope to replace the nano with a "treasure box" again. Just like the
original, it will have a mixed trade theme-- botanical, travel and
High Hope dreams!
Enjoy!
Congratulations to Holth for
FTF!
STEALTH 101 TIPS: Well, let's see. You could pretend to:
tie your shoe, rub a sore knee or ankle, or make a cell phone call
(an Etrex can be passed off as a phone, you know!). Or pretend
you're waiting for a late friend (repeatedly looking at your wrist
watch with an annoyed look helps). And all the while you are really
stealthily retrieving & returning a cache! Hope that helps!
If this goes AWOL & you don't want to log a DNF, please
e-mail me thru gc. It's the only way I have of knowing if
something's gone wrong. Thanks!
