I just love the caches in this area that make you hike through the National Forest to get to the top of an old lookout tower hill or to some other neat area. This is one of those caches.
Your challenge: To Hike or to Kayak? If you decide to hike, the only reasonable car access leaves you at least a quarter of a mile away (West)at the most direct point. If there are storms and the access "road" is wet, plan on 3/4 of a mile in unless you have really good four wheel drive.
DO NOT ACCESS FROM THE EAST SIDE OF THE RIVER! It is all private property and no permission is granted.
Hiking in means that you will pick up those pesky mini livestock that love to crawl up your legs. However, if you start your bushwack at the right place you will eventually come across another "road" that will lead you near the cache.
If you decide to Kayak, canoe or inter-tube you will be rewarded to a great time when the river is high. Personally, when the river is low, inter-tubing and kayaking really fustrates me. There is an eddy pool near the cache site that would then only require about 30 feet of bushwacking.
For the river route, I would suggest putting in at the Highway 32 bridge over the Oconto River. There is a parking area that indicates a CCC project that was completed there in the past. The only really good place to take out early is at the end of Section 4 road, N 46.10.438, W 088.29.608. If you don't take out there you can continue down the river 1/2 hour to the County Hwy bridge and take out there. I have done this river run in as little as 40 minutes and as long as one and one half hours if the river is low.
Coordinates are an average of 22 readings with both a Magellan and a Garmin. The signal was really weak when we placed it so if you have better coordinates please suggest them to me. Be sure to waive if you see me sitting on my chair watching you from across the river.
