Geocache Description:

****************************************

Reclusive and considered insane by many, John Tornow was suspected of the 1911 killing of his 19 year old nephews near the Satsop river. Retreating into the dense forest and living like a wild man, John gradually worked his way into the upper Wynoochee valley. After several sightings and another double murder, the area became the focal point of an extensive and exhausting manhunt. This was rugged country... It still is, but try to imagine no roads whatsoever and only the most primitive of trails.

This series of caches highlights some of the more notable locations visited by John Tornow and his pursuers during the violent manhunt which lasted a long nineteen months... Almost a full century has gone by since those deadly events, things have changed and places don't look the same, but we have tried to place the caches respectfully and as close to the actual locations as can be.

Tornow Lake
This was the site of John Tornow's last hideout. On Apr 16, 1913, his wanderings and his life ended when three deputies came upon him here.

As the story goes, Tornow kept frogs penned up near his shack. When they suddenly became quiet, he knew something or someone was approaching. He hid behind a windfall and ambushed the deputies as they drew near. Two deputies fell, but Giles Quimby got off a lucky shot and Tornow's reign of terror came to a sudden end.

We think Tornow's hideout and of course the final gun fight were very near the cache site. Deputies Lewis Blair and Charles Lathrop lost their lives nearby... As did John Tornow.

As you draw near, you will notice the frogs have become silent... John's ghost has been warned of your approach!

Be alert... he could be behind that next tree.
