Reclusive and considered insane by many, John Tornow was suspected of the 1911 killing of his 19 tear old nephews near the Satsop river. Retreating into the dense forest and living like a wild man, John gradually worked his way into the upper wynoochee valley. After several sightings and another double murder, the area became the focal point of an extensive and exhausting manhunt. This was rugged country... It still is, but try to imagine no roads whatsoever and only the most primitive of trails.
This series of caches highlights some of the more notable locations visited by John Tornow and his pursuers during the violent manhunt which lasted nineteen months. Almost a full century has gone by since those deadly events, things have changed and places don't look the same, but we have tried to place the caches respectfully and as close to the actual locations as can be.

Benner's Cabin
In 1912, Alvy Benner had a cabin somewhere near this spot. It was on the old trail from the upper Wynoochee to the headwaters of the Satsop. Woodsmen and hunters traveling from the Shelton - Matlock area would pass by here. Several times a posse in search of suspected killer John Tornow would stop for the night. It became a base camp for them when two members of their party were found shot near the river just a few miles away.

Look for a brass object attached to this container, it bears a clue to the coordinates of the final cache in the series (GC1C6Q3 Manhunt pt5... Tornow Lake)
