Geocache Description:

This cache is placed at the highest point in Cabo San Lucas with an elevation of 378m (1240ft). Atop of this hill are several radio, cell, TV & microwave towers. The cache is hidden on a ridge due East from the last Antenna. Here you will be on a panoramic point that offers a fantastic 360 degree view of the area and the ability to see as far as San Jose.

As this cache is named “Extreme” you should be aware that even though the access to this cache is somewhat easy, in order for you to be successful, please take note of the precautions listed below :

Distance: depending on where you decide to park (see options A or B below), the one way distance to the cache can be anywhere between 3 km (1.9 miles) and 2 km (1.2 miles). The maximum return trip will be 6 km (3.7 miles). The total elevation gain will be in the range of 218m (715 ft) to 263m (863 ft). The beginning is moderate, the last part becomes steeper.

Parking: Two options, A) Longer - beside the new housing development or B) Shorter - beside the access road gate. Because this is Mexico your vehicle will be much safer in the parking area near the show homes of this complex. (See waypoint below) however, parking here will add 2 km (1.2 miles) return to your journey. In option B) you will be at the start of the hike, but you are at your own risk for the security of your vehicle.

Access: Start this hike from the old white gate (see waypoint below). From here you will see your destination which seems close but it is still 2km (1.24 miles) away. Simply follow this open access road up to the Antenna. In fact, if you had a 4x4 or an ATV and have enough experience you can drive up to the antennas – but please do NOT attempt! This one lane road is currently open and gets quite rough near the top. Please help keep it open by not taking your vehicles into this area and it will also help reduce the impact of the road condition. Mainly - vehicle use is reserved only for locals. You will see the occasional truck, mountain and/or dirt bikers in this area so pay attention. Stay on the road, it’s a bit longer but is the safest way. It’s OK to use this access road by foot & you will notice many hiking trails & some vista points in this area.

Conditions: This hike can be quite challenging without the proper footwear. Be sure to have a good set of hiking boots. Bring plenty of water as this is true desert and there is no shade. Timing is essential, avoid mid afternoon because it will get exceptionally hot. The natural environment is dry & dusty complemented with a multitude of cacti & desert plants. You may see the occasional snake, lizard, scorpion and vulture!

To start, take the road that goes up the hill immediately across from the Pemex station @ km 5 on the Mex1 (just outside of Cabo on the way to San Jose). Follow this straight paved road approaching a gated community called Rancho Paraiso. Just before the Rancho notice a blue road sign “La Vista”, turn Right and follow this paved/dirt road to the parking areas as described above.

If you are up to the challenge, be sure to look at the photos and perhaps take some notes. The exact location of this cache is found in the additional hints. Once you are at the top, you will see several large towers. Look East, you will see a series of smaller antennas, follow the trail and go this direction. Near the last few antennas, the trail will split, now look for an older abandoned aerial with a grey box bolted to its mast – head this way. You will be required to scramble over a few rocks from here. Caution - old wire & some debris can be found & also rock “wobblers” so watch your footing. As you are on a ridge there is not much choice as you keep heading Eastwards eventually ending up at a group of large boulders, a cactus & a dead tree. You now have come to the highest point on this ridge – a large rock with an upside down “N” spray painted on it – you can stand here & take in the view. The cache is below, covered by two small flat rocks. (Please replace these disguising rocks as non-geocachers may discover it).
