A rare winter tornado hit Iroquois park near the horse barns on January 29th, 2008. This was followed by an ice storm on February 22nd, 2008 resulting in a large number of uprooted and damaged trees in the park. As I hiked through the woods in the park I lamented at the beautiful large pines, oaks, beeches, and others that had been affected. Then I slowed down and examined the forest for a moment and realized that new life was emerging from all around those giant fallen sentinels. More often than not some of those old trees were nearing the end of their life cycle. With their weakened trunks and root systems they just succumbed to the elements. Before their demise they peppered the forest with their pine cones, acorns, nuts, and seed pods to help assure survival of their species. Their cycle is not quite over however as they now slowly break down and provide nourishment to scores of new fauna and flora. Such is the circle of life in the forest.
The cache is cammoed 35mm film container hidden near the tornados path.
Parking is available at N38 09.266 W085 47.594. Here you will see some of the remains of many trees near the road that were cut up and hauled away following the tornado. Most of trees further back in the woods will likely be allowed to remain where they fell. As you walk through the destruction zone look and see if you can spot the new life.
