Geocache Description:

A nice easy cache and dash at the location of an important monument

In the early hours of the 28th of April 1944 eight Landing Ship Tanks full of American servicemen were in Lyme Bay, off the coast of Devon, England. Their purpose to take part in Exercise Tiger, the realistic rehearsals for the D-Day landings in Normandy. The night turned into tragedy as a group of patrolling German e-boats discovered and attacked them. At the end of Exercise Tiger 946 American serviceman had lost their lives.

It was the mystery and magic of Slapton Sands that drew Ken Small to Devon, England. He was a happy man running a guesthouse, fishing, netting and potting until one fine day, without any reason, he had a nervous breakdown.

Ken started beachcombing as part of his recovery for his breakdown

It was through this pursuit that he found evidence of the American practice landings for D-Day and the disaster during Exercise Tiger in April 1944

Ken tirelessly campaigned to recover a 32 ton Sherman tank lost in the exercise, later recovered from the sea bed and now displayed at Slapton Sands in memory of all the American servicemen who tragically lost their lives
