The Kirkton of Bourtie - Stone circle
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Cache is a white plastic tub with a snap lid containing a log book.
Please bring your own pen / pencil. The cache is big enough for
small Travel bugs and Geocoins. This is a cache and dash set away
from the stone circle.
This stone cicle is one of many dotted around the North East. This
one is of a type known as a recumbent stone circle because of the
large stone lying on its side. The recumbent stone is the largest
in Scotland, measuring 5.2m long and weighing around 30 tons. It is
aligned on the major southern moonset. The stones are of grey
granite and it is thought that the circle may be around 4,500 years
old. It would appear that many of the stones have been removed and
can be seen used as gate posts and also in the walls of the field.
Although the circle is set in a farmed field there is a plaque at
the entrance giving permission to enter and see the stones close
up. However I would suggest that you refrain from entering if there
is a crop planted at the time of visiting.
