Geocache Description:

Welcome to Tory Island, Irelands most Northerly inhabited island. The cache near located in An Reilig Ghallda which is at the Westerly side of the Island. In 1884, the British Gunboat, HMS Wasp was despatched from Westport, Co. Mayo, on behalf of the landlord Benjamin St John Baptist Joule, a Manchester businessman, who bought Tory Island in 1861, to collect arrears on Tory and Inishtrahull, an island further to the northeast. The boat had visited Tory before, including in the spring of 1883 when she ran a mercy mission on behalf of the Quakers (Society of Friends) to bring seed potatoes to the island. In September 1884, the Wasp was enroute from Sligo to Moville, Co. Donegal, where it was planned to take on board police and bailiffs for possible evictions on Inishtrahull, but as it approached Tory it foundered on rocks west of the lighthouse with the loss of 52 lives. All but 6 of her crew perished. Eight members of the crew were buried in An Reilig Ghallda (the Foreign Graveyard) which is located near Scoilt An Mhóirsheisir on the Northwest. After this tragedy no further attempts were made to collect rates or rent from either Tory or Inishtrahull.
