7" camoed pill bottle located at coordinates 45 feet n.w. of monument
The border war between Kansas and Missouri was a vicious war, pitting slavery against pro-slavery forces.
Leading the anti-slavery forces where the Kansas “Jayhawkers” (the bird that cannot be caught) and the leading of the Pro-slavery forces were the Missouri “bushwhackers” (the sound made as the guerrilla fighters pants made as they rode through the brush).
With the tension building between the “Border States” It was bound to happen. Skirmishes along the Kansas, Missouri where commonplace.
As the war (Civil War) was being fought in the east (1861) The Jayhawkers and/or Red Legs as they were called saw an opportunity to settle some old scores. Led by Charles Jennison the Jayhawkers laid siege to western Missouri , taking food stores, safes emptied, looting and pillaging, chaos reined. One by one western Missouri towns and communities fell victim to their forays.
Cattle, sheep, and personal belongings now headed west in wagon trains, along with the hopes and dreams of the Missourians. (less than 1-1/2 % where slave owners) Jennison was hailed a hero. Later came the likes of James Mongomery and the Redlegs (because of the red leather leggings worn around their legs from the knee down). This group engaged in a lucrative horse and cattle stealing operation.
As the war raged on, there was the emergence of William Quantrell .(bushwhacker)
Quantrell in 1863 led a group of men into Lawrence,KS and dispatched “150” citizens.
This memorial is dedicated to those who lost their lives during that action in Lawrence,Ks. On 21 August 1863.
Today a memorial stands, placed in 1895 to honor those dead. The memorial is approx. 45 ft. S.E. of the cache location.
